Are You an Ex-NMMU Cricket Player From 1965-1995? If
you are an Ex UPE and/or PE Technikon (now Nelson
Mandela Metropolitan University
) alumnus who played
cricket between 1965 and 1995, you are being called to a reunion match
and a party to end all parties to be held at the NMMU in May 2010.

Well known cricket commentator and Executive Director of the
NMMU Trust Professor Kotie Grove is organising the reunion, along with
long-time friend Flip Potgieter, the former Eastern Province Cricket
Board president.

“This reunion is essentially a celebration of the first 30 years of
NMMU Cricket (then known as UPE and PE Tech). We will start with golf
and a braai on the Friday and on the Saturday we will go on to play
eight 20/20 matches at NMMU, divided into age groups. We will also
cater for the over 65s.

“We have some star cricket players who hailed from this university and
who went on to play for the Eastern Province and for South Africa. They
are living all over the world but are already voicing their excitement
about coming to this reunion.

“For instance, Dave Richardson, former Protea’s player, who now lives
in Dubai has express interested in attending. Tim Shaw, Keppler
Wessels, Mark Rushmere, Dave Callaghan, Shafiek Abrahams (now coaching
at NMMU) and Justin Kemp are just some of the big names likely to be at
this reunion.

However, we must stress that this reunion is for everyone who played
cricket during these years and not just the big names. We are targeting
300 players and the Saturday 20/20 matches will be open to the public
so they can come and see their heroes and old boys in action. We are
also hoping to attract TV coverage of this big day.

“This is the last big party Flip and I will organize before we go, so
it’s going to be good, that is a guarantee,” adds Prof Grove with a
characteristic grin.

Anybody who played cricket for the university between 1965 and 1995 and
who wants to join in the fun can contact Kotie Grove on 083
627 5488 or kotie.nmmu[at]
or Elda Van Vuuren at the NMMU
Trust on elda.nmmut[at]
