Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Safety and Security Portfolio
Councillor, Bicks Ndoni , has called on the Safety & Security
Directorate to rededicate itself to promoting safety, law and order in
the Bay.
Speaking at the opening of the Directorate’s two day strategic planning
session which started on Monday, 22 February 2010 and ended on Tuesday,
23 February 2010, Clr. Ndoni appealed to management to ‘instill within
their subordinates a sense of patriotism’. ‘As Safety &
Security we are entrusted with the important task of promoting law and
order and at the moment we all agree that residents of Nelson Mandela
Bay deserve better, it is in this vain that we must recommit ourselves
to delivering effective and efficient services to the paying public, he
said.
Clr. Ndoni remarked that residents of Nelson Mandela Bay were ‘watching
us’ and that it is incumbent upon the staff in the Directorate to
display
behaviour that is beyond reproach.’We owe it to ourselves and the
city’s residents not to allow law and order to collapse, he concluded.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Safety and Security Directorate
has identified six top priorities that will help turn the Directorate
around into an effective and efficient service delivery unit. The
priorities identified are:
- The establishment of the Metro Police Service
- Cooperation between the Directorate’s top management in
order to provide clear leadership and strategic direction - A highly visible traffic force that has a professional
image and enjoys positive publicity - A highly effective security force that promotes a zero
tolerance of crime - Ensuring that effective communication and information
management systems are in place - Ensuring that the Directorate is adequately staffed with
employees that are happy and disciplined
‘The Safety and Security Directorate has an important and strategic
role to play in the growth and development of Nelson Mandela Bay, it is
important that it operates optimally’, said Safety and Security
Portfolio Councilor Bicks Ndoni.’At the strategic session we all agreed
to these priorities and committed to action plans and time frames by
when tangible improvements’ should be visible’, he concluded.
