Dear EP, Please Stop Winning The
EP Kings ran all over the Border Bulldogs at the NMB
on Friday
evening 27 August. The final score was 49-6 after a halftime score of

Many first string players were taking a well earned ‘injury
recuperation period’ and the Border Bulldogs were looking forward to
taking a bite out of a supposedly second string EP side. This was not
to be as EP ignored the frenzied barking and growling eventually taming
the dogs with a mammoth total.

A close to 5000 strong crowd were treated to an early sub 4 minute try
by newcomer, Paul Perez.

With points scored every 8 minutes on average the crowd delighted in a
recharged professional EP Kings side – a far cry from the recent past
where EP were considered the whipping boys and the talent migrated out
of the province.

As predicted by coach Alan Solomons, Border are dangerous when the play
becomes unstructured as it did in the latter part of the second half –
it looks like the EP Kings will have to work on a game plan to counter
unstructured play in their opponents going forward.

To see EP not rise to the bait and become combative in the face of
undue pressure was a testament to the sides growing confidence and
maturity. Set pieces were set up well and executed flawlessly leading
to try after try. One gets a sense that the individual play that has
been a hallmark of EP in the past has now disappeared in favour of a
greater focus on incremental gains, teamwork and relentless sticking to
the plan.

Top scorer of the match was EP Flyhalf, Jaco van Schalkwyk with a haul
of 17 points from 4 conversions and 3 penalties. EP Flank, Jacques
Potgieter displayed some fiery play and bagged two tries.

  • EP 49 – Tries: Paul Perez, Jacques Potgieter (2), Gerrie
    Odendaal, Milo
Nqoro, Tiger Mangweni. Conversions: Jaco van Schalkwyk (4), Mzwandile
    Stick. Penalties: Van Schalkwyk (3).
  • Border 6 – Penalties: Logan Basson (2).

The EP Kings retain their position on top of the log in the Absa Currie
Cup First Division with 6 wins on the trot and 28 points. SWD are on 20
points after 4 wins and 1 loss to EP, Griffons on 13 points after 5
games, Border on 11 points after 6 games, Boland on 8 points after 5
games and the Valke on 6 points after 5 games.

One can comfortable predict that EP will now take part in the tough
part of the competition – promotion/relegation. At present the two
teams at the bottom of the Premier League are the Platinum Leopards (4
points from 8 matches) and the Pumas (12 points from 8 matches).

Okay, I am gonna stick my neck out here and predict that after EP make
it into the Premier Division they will end the first year in the Top 5
along with the Sharks, Blue Bulls, Cheetahs and Western Province.

Great Scrumhalf Action ShotEarlier on in the
afternoon Grey
Junior School
u13a took on Ezee Fana u13a – a great
day for the youngsters playing in their first rugby match at
the NMB
. Grey won 37 – 0.

from the Grey Ezee Fana Match

Of course we had to go and celebrate EP’s win – and that is why I want
EP to please stop winning – I don’t know if I will be able to take so
much fun and laughter in the precints surrounding the NMB Stadium. And
that is a whole other article in development around the Longhair and I
venturing into Nam (SydenNam)!
