Dog Racing

Public meeting to oppose the re-introduction of dog racing to take place in Port Elizabeth on 20 February at 09:00 – 12:30 at Protea Marine, Summerstrand.

Dog racing was first banned in South Africa in 1949. A number of attempts have been made to have dog racing legalised again. More than one Commission has been appointed to consider the merits of legalising dog racing but found in favour of retaining the ban. A further effort was made to challenge the legality of existing legislation yet again in 2002. The High Court (Free State Division) rejected with costs, the application by UGRABS (United Greyhound Racing and Breeders Association) and ruled that current legislation banning dog racing, was still in place and valid.

In spite of all this, yet another effort to have dog racing legalised has once again surfaced, this time from a private company, RZT Zelpy 4294. The Directors of this company reportedly consist of individuals who are dog owners and trainers, business people and lawyers. Some of the previous members/committee of UGRABS are now members/directors of RZT Zelpy

Efforts are also underway to join forces with an influential BEE company.

By their own admission, the pro-lobby campaign acknowledges that dog racing does impact on animal welfare organisations. Supporters of welfare organisations expect animal welfare funding to be utilised in a specific manner. Should dog racing be legalised, the public should be made aware that their donations to the animal welfare organisations will effectively be utilised to subsidise the dog racing industry. Welfare organisations will be forced to act as regulators and disposal outlets.
