First Diesel Engines Roll Off of Struandale Plant The Ford Struandale
Engine Plant has attained a landmark achievement in the build-up for
the Puma Global engine export programme, with the first validation
build engines being produced ahead of schedule.

The historical first engine emerged from the brand-new Puma Assembly
Hall on 25 November, setting the ball rolling for the initial series of
engine assembly trials that are being used to evaluate the capabilities
of the new and refurbished facilities.

This programme also assess the readiness of the employees who have
undergone extensive training on the advanced new-generation engine,
which is known internally as ‘Puma’, and belongs to Ford’s highly-rated
‘Duratorq’ diesel engine family.

explains Peter Lawson, Vice President Operations, Ford Motor Company of
Southern Africa. “The equipment is in place, the stations are fully
operational and all of the best-in-class quality initiatives have been

“Certainly there’s still a lot of work ahead as the team conducts
detailed trials and reviews to ensure that the capability is up to the
required standard, but it’s fantastic to see the first batch of engines
finished, and the assembly line running.”

“We’re in really good shape in terms of timing,” Lawson says. “The
Engine Plant will be machining components and assembling engines over
the next couple of months as we continue with the validations and
capability studies, building up to job one in the second quarter of
