Government steps in to further assist Bay United
Government took a firm decision today to cement its relations with the
Eastern Cape based Bay United and tenaciously work towards adequately
assisting this club to once again participate in the Premier Soccer
League in the near future.

During a meeting held at the Port Elizabeth City Hall which was chaired
by Minister of Sport and Recreation, Rev Makhenkesi Stofile, a
recommendation was also accepted that the Eastern Cape Department of
Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture must head a Task Team of
stakeholders that will provide the necessary support to the club. The
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be a key stakeholder in this Task
Team given its track record of continuously assisting the club.

Bay United’s woes deepened when their poor lack of form resulted in
their relegation from the Premier Soccer League after they finished the
season at the bottom of the log.

Rev Makhenkesi Stofile said it is a common occurrence that teams are
not well supported when they don’t perform on the soccer pitch but
stressed that it will not be the case with Bay United.

“Win or lose there will be no orphans,” he emphasized.

Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy Executive Mayor Bicks Ndoni, who jokingly
confessed to be a Bay United supporter, reiterated the city’s support
to the club from the beginning of the season and added that he
personally extended a hand of friendship to the former manager and the
chairman of the club.

“We should be more positive about the club’s chances of regaining its
status in top flight soccer and put all our efforts together to assist
them,” he said.

Eastern Cape MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Ms Xoliswa
Tom, said a comprehensive look at what it will require to chance the

“We must also be able to determine all the barriers to ensure that our
approach is wide-ranging when tackling this serious matter,” she added.
