Hang Ten Surf Lifesaving Nationals at Bluewater Bay
www.MyPE.co.za: Six
hundred of the fittest surf lifesavers in the country converge at
Bluewater Bay beach next week for the annual Hang Ten Surf Lifesaving
National Championships, hosted by the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving
Club.
The four day extravaganza starts off on the morning of Wednesday 24
March 2010 when the golden oldies of the movement compete in the
Hansgrohe Masters Nationals, from 9.30am until about noon. Competitors
compete in five year age groups, from 30 – 34, 35 – 39, 40 – 44, etc,
and several competitors are expected in the 60 plus category. Locals
are expected to feature in the medals as the event usually features a
large entry from the host city.
The Lifesaving South Africa 2010 Inter Regional Championships will be
held from 13h15 until about 17h00 on Wednesday afternoon and Western
Province and KwaZulu Natal will again compete for overall honours. The
East Cape team is also expected to feature in the results.
The 2010 Hang Ten Lifesaving South Africa Surf Nationals start at 8:00
am
on Thursday morning and the competitors will compete in three arenas
during the three day event. The under 16′s and under 19′s compete in
the junior surf arena, whilst the senior men and ladies contest their
titles in the main arena. All the beach events are contested in a
special beach area set aside for sprints and flags.
The daily programme is subject to change, but the action usually starts
from 8:00 am and the last event is usually completed by 5pm. Spectators
are most welcome, there is no entry fee and the event commentators keep
everyone informed on all the action.
Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club‘s
National team member, Mandi Maritz,
who won three gold medals at the Hang Ten Lifesaving SA Senior and
Junior National Championships at Durban’s North Beach last year, should
again be one stars of the three day championships.
Last year Durban Surf scored 499 points to reclaim the senior title,
beating the defending champions, Fish Hoek, who only mustered 312
points. Umhlanga Rocks placed third (250) and Pirates were fourth
(235). The six member Summerstrand senior team excelled to place fifth,
with 114 points, and two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Bluewater Bay placed eleventh and Seagulls were fifteenth.
At the 2009 titles, Fish Hoek retained the junior title, also by a wide
margin, scoring 694 points to runners-up Durban Surf (354) and
third-placed Pirates (346). East London won 4 gold, 2 silver
and 2 bronze medals to place sixth (137) and the 13 strong Summerstrand
team placed eighth (116), winning 2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medal.
Summerstrand won the 2010 East Cape Championships last weekend, scoring
1073 points to East London’s 737 points. Kings Beach placed third with
284, followed by Sardinia Bay, 125, and Bluewater Bay, 119. Several
stars showed that they are ready for the nationals and hopefully the
local competitors will take advantage of the home surf conditions to
clinch their fair share of the national titles and medals at stake.
