Holly Ayre Takes the Cake

www.MyPE.co.za: Holly
Ayre, a twelve-year-old scholar from south England with Port Elizabeth
roots raised R1750 in just two weeks to support a small Port Elizabeth
charity
thousands of kilometers away.

Thand’usana
Babies Home
in Newton Park, established in October 2008, is
a home for abandoned, abused and orphaned babies up to two-years-old.

Holly Ayre’s mother, Jo, hails from Port Elizabeth and moved to England
16 years ago when she married Robert. Jo is a former Collegiate
student
and her mother, Denise Wright, still resides in Port Elizabeth.

The Ayre’s family were due for a visit to South Africa after a gap of
seven years in the country and planned a two week holiday in Port
Elizabeth in April this year. Their leisurely holiday turned into a
mission of charity after the family saw an article about Thand’usana in
a local magazine,

“My gran from PE sends us news clippings out of local publication and
we saw a tiny article about Thand’usana,” said Holly, speaking via
telephone from the UK. “We thought this small new charity that nobody
really knows about would really need our help.”

With just two weeks before their flight to South Africa, Holly got
straight onto the task of selling cakes to her classmates to raise
funds. She took orders for banoffie pies, chocolate pavlovas and
chocolate brownies at school, then went home and baked late into the
evening.

“I go to school six days a week and only come home after six in the
evening, so it was a mad rush to try raise as much money as I could,”
says Holly.

Holly AyreIn just two weeks,
Holly raised £150 (R1750) and brought it over to
South Africa to deliver to Audrey van Wyk, Thand’usana coordinator.
“The generosity and kindness of Holly and the Ayres family is
astounding and we really enjoyed her visit with us,” says Audrey. Holly
described her two visits to Thand’usana as the highlight of her trip
and was touched by the warmth and love of the Thand’usana babies
despite the unfortunate start to their lives.

“The excitement to meet the babies was unbearable. I will never forget
their beaming faces and open arms and I think about them every day,”
says the humble Holly.

Holly plans to continue her fundraising efforts with an upcoming
carboot sale (garage sale) and sponsored sleepovers as some of her
ideas.

Holly sets an example to all South Africans as she demonstrates that
raising money for charity has nothing to do with how old you are, where
you come from, or how much time you have on your hands. “I am so proud
of Holly as she just has the most humble and caring heart,” says
Holly’s mother, Jo. “She can’t wait to do more for Thand’usana and we
are planning another trip back to South Africa soon.”

Thand’usana
babies home
is in desperate need of support from the
business and private community as the charity does not receive any
support from government. Just R20 or R100 per month enables the Home to
budget and creates sustainability. For those who prefer to donate
products, Pelargon and Infacare 1-3 formula milks, medium and large
nappies, latex gloves and fresh produce are all beneficial.
