Human Rights Law Book Launched at NMMU

www.MyPE.co.za: When
Prof Avinash Govindjee identified a need for a Human Rights
introductory textbook for the law students, he decided to tackle the
task of compiling a suitable one.

Together with Prof Patrick Vrancken, they produced a book – “An
Introduction to Human Rights Law” – which deals with the breadth of
human rights law as it applies to the South African student.

It focuses on the South African application, as well as a regional and
international perspective and has relevant case studies.

“Due to human rights law being such a complex legal subject, it was
crucial to create a textbook that simplified the details and facts but
without ‘dumbing it down’,” said Prof Govindjee.

Contributing authors from NMMU
and other universities took part in this
arduous undertaking which, with some endurance and a lot of editing,
eventually developed into an excellent, user-friendly, high quality
book.

This is certainly not the first book that Prof Govindjee or Prof
Vrancken has produced but they both felt that this gap in the
curriculum needed to be filled.

Prof Vrancken stated that he sees this book as an essential
contribution to the faculty and he felt it was his duty to the faculty
and to Prof Govindjee to give additional support on such a massive
subject.  Prof Govindjee thanked all his colleagues for their
support, as well as to his wife, to whom this would not have been
possible without the support of his family.

According to the Dean, Prof Vivienne  Lawack-Davids, the book
was pitched at a high level with academic rigour but yet still
maintained a nice balance.

The publishers, Lexis Nexis, have had an ongoing relationship with many
faculties at NMMU.
Their representative, Subendri Naidoo, stated that
they were fully aware of the amount of work that goes into editing such
a book and that they felt extremely proud to be associated with such
top academics.
