Ironman Blog by NMMU Students The
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s French subject group and the
Department of Journalism, Media and Philosophy is playing host to
renowned French journalism trainer, Patrick Lenormand from 30 March – 9
April 2009. Lenormand is offering intensive multimedia journalism
training to a select group of French and Media, Communication and
Culture students during this period as part of a joint project between
the university, the French Embassy and the Alliance Française.

The project culminated in the creation of a blog in French and English
about the IronMan South Africa event, which took place on 5 April. The
Ironman blog
articles in French and English, audio recordings, video clips and
photographs about the event produced by the students participating in
the project. The focus is on the story behind the scenes rather than
the results of the event.

Funding for the project was obtained from the French Embassy with the
assistance of the Alliance Française and the NMMU
Trust. This is the
third year of the project, which aims to expand its scope in 2010 with
coverage of the Soccer World Cup.

The French Embassy has previously funded infrastructure for the French
subject group such as the creation of a multimedia room as well as
offering bursaries to students to attend journalism training courses or
to teach English as a foreign language in France. The NMMU
provided the funding for the payment of the trainer, while the French
Embassy is funding his travel and accommodation.

“Students will have the opportunity to learn the techniques of
multimedia journalism from a specialist in the field,” says Dr Hilda
Thomas of the French subject group. “We have selected the top students
in French at second and third year level as well as a few students who
are streaming in print journalism and video production in the BA Media,
Communication and Culture programme to take part in this project.”

Lenormand is an experienced print and online journalist and editor who
teaches at the prestigious Centre Pour le Formation et Perfectionnement
de Journalists
(CFPJ) in Paris, France. He is
currently completing his PhD on multimedia journalism.
