Is a Bit of Criminal Mayhem on the Cards in PE This Weekend?
www.MyPE.co.za: The
SAPS are having a National Celebration day this weekend. From 29 to 31
January (Thursday to Saturday) 650 Police Officers from the Nelson
Mandela Bay Metropole will be attending this celebration.
Reliable estimates are that the transport of these 650 officers from
Port Elizabeth and surrounds alone will be in the region of R275 000.00.
The very real fear from citizens is that criminals will take advantage
of the dearth of police officers over this period and engage in
nefarious activities with impunity.
Although, we think that maybe the crime in Port Elizabeth will not
increase as:
- We are sure that the police officers going are mostly ‘fat
cats’, so the sharp end of our police force will still be ready and
fully staffed. - Our Traffic Officers have show great dedication by claiming
18 hours of work per day for 30 days – I am sure they would we more
than willing to claim 24 hours of work for the three days that the SAPS
are off celebrating. - Our council does not think that any contingency plans
should be put in place to supplement the 650 vacant police posts -
witnessed by Council refusing to hear a Motion of Exigency on 25
January to discuss such plans or even emergency deployment of Municipal
Security staff. - And, of course, everyone thinks that criminals are dumb so
they will not read online or in the newspapers about the ‘selected
temporary re-deployment’ of police officers.
Enjoy your break SAPS – won’t you have egg on your face if the crime
rate drops this weekend?
