What is the big buzz
about the IPL?

The Indian
Premier League
is a franchise based Twenty20 competition
organised by the BCCI, and backed by the ICC. It features the world’s
best cricketers playing for eight city-based franchises. The first
season was
from April-June 2008.  The affiliation of each of the players
is decided by open auction. The first player auction, on February 20
2008, had franchises bid for a maximum of eight international players
from a pool of 89. A similar auction occured in 2009, with 17
international players picked.

Each team may field a maximum of 4 internationals during a game and
each team must have a maximum of four under 19 youth players. An
incredible way of getting youth players to learn at the feet of greats
of the game.

The owners of each IPL franchise are a mix of big business and
Bollywood superstars such as beer and airline baron Vijay Mallya, who
bought the Bangalore franchise for 1.6 million and Bollywood actor
Shah Rukh Khan whose Red Chillies Entertainment bought the Kolkata
franchise for million.

The Kings XI Punjab owners include Bollywood star Preity
, Ness Wadia (Bombay Dyeing), Karan
Paul (Apeejay Surendera Group) and Mohit Burman (Dabur). The group paid
a total of million to acquire the franchise.

Tickets for the IPL
at Sahara St Georges are on sale now and range from
R10.00 for unreserved children to R75.00 for the Top Tier. A pretty
affordable deal to see some exciting cricket. The IPL are expecting to
sell around 1.5 million seats tickets and the expected worldwide
television audience is over 2 billion people. In 2008 2.1 billion
people watched the IPL on television.

What a spectacular coup for South
Africa and Port Elizabeth to be hosting 7 matches at St Georges.
