Man Found With Throat Slit Outside Popular Walmer Nightclub

www.MyPE.co.za: From
the Atlas Security Crime
Newsletter we have picked out a couple of interesting crime incidents:

A NIGHTCLUB in Heugh Road, Walmer had to call for an ambulance after a
man collapsed outside the popular venue on Tuesday (2 March) night
shortly before 9pm. The 55-year-old man, who had been walking down the
road from the
direction of South End, had apparently had his throat slit and was
bleeding profusely.

The ambulance arrived and the man was taken to provincial hospital, but
died on route. Police are investigating a case of murder.

Atlas Guard Catches
Mugger in Richmond Hill

AN ATLAS armed response guard on patrol in Richmond Hill came to the
aid of a woman who had just been mugged in St Stephens Street on
Tuesday, and caught the suspect involved in St Phillips Street shortly
thereafter. Police arrived on the scene and the suspect was arrested.

Police Catch Pot Thief
Before Residents Even Notice Theft

A FAMILY living in Jason Street, Framesby, didn’t even know that they
had been the victims of theft until the police knocked on their door on
Monday evening and returned a collection of empty potplants to them.

Apparently the police had noticed a man walking down the road with the
pots and had stopped to question him. He confessed that he had stolen
the pots from the lapa area at the back of the house. He was arrested
and has been charged with theft.

Would be Robber Narrowly
Misses Getting Shot While Trying to Escape

A WOULD-BE robber got more than he bargained for after trying to force
his way into a townhouse in 8th Avenue Walmer in the early hours of
Monday morning. The owner, who had been lying in bed with the window
open shortly after
1am, noticed someone trying to open the curtains. She sms’ed her
neighbour who immediately pressed his panic button and the man fled.
Another neighbour noticed what the man was wearing and informed Atlas
armed response officers who arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.

The officers then heard shots being fired nearby, and rushed to the
scene, where they found the would-be robber coming out of premises in
Prospect road. Apparently the owner had noticed the man in their yard
and fired off a warning round. Atlas detained the man until police
arrived and arrested him on charges
of attempted break in and trespassing.

Man Shot, Bleeds to Death
in Fatal Robbery

A MAN was shot in the chest, under his right arm, and bled to death in
Sidwell Avenue, Sidwell on Saturday morning, after robbers followed him
from a bank where he had drawn a large sum of money. The man, aged 40,
had gone to the bank and drew a large sum of money
for his business. It is believed that three men, driving a white polo
with Durban licence plates, followed him to the business.

When he saw the three men behind him at the gate, the man allegedly
tried to reverse, and one of his attackers opened fire. He was shot
through the driver’s side window. The men then grabbed the cash and
fled the scene in the Polo. Atlas armed response, ambulance and police
all arrived at the scene and
attempted to resuscitate the man, but he bled out due to his wounds and
passed away.

Here are some
safety tips to avoid becoming the victim of such a
robbery:

If you are a small business person and you need to make cash deposit at
your bank on regular basis;

  • Alternate the days and times on which you deposit cash.
  • Never make your bank visits public, even to people close to
    you
    (especially your employees).
  • Do not openly display the money you are depositing while
    you are
    standing in the bank queue.
  • Avoid carrying money bags, briefcases or openly displaying
    your
    deposit receipt book .
  • It’s advisable to identify another bank branch nearby that
    you can
visit to ensure that your banking pattern is not easily figured out.
  • If the amount of cash you are regularly depositing is
    increasing as
your business grow, consider the possibility of using a cash management
    company.

If you are a business person and you need to draw cash from your bank
on regular basis to pay wages to your contract and casual labourers,
apply these TIPS to avoid being a victim of robberies;

  • Refrain from giving wages to your contract or casual
    labourers in
    full view of the public.
  • Refrain from driving to bank branches in your marked
    business car
full of labourers on a typical ‘pay day’.
  • Arrange an alternative “pay day’ with your contract or
    casual
labourers instead of sticking to the standard last day of the week or
    fortnight.
  • Arrange for transfer of the wages of your contract or
    casual
    labourers into their personal accounts.

of Men in Central

of men last Thursday afternoon. According to the owner between 10 and
15 men came into the store and robbed him. Some of the men allegedly

robbery.

E-mail Circulating About
Rape at a Shopping Centre in Lorraine

An e-mail has been circulating about an incident alleged to have taken
place at a well known shopping complex in Lorraine. According to the
mail, a woman was attacked in her vehicle on a Saturday night while
waiting for her boyfriend in the parking lot. It then alleges that
another woman had previously been dragged into the security toilets and
raped and that the gym in the area had advised women not to utilise the
gym after 8pm.

On following up the information, Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra
Janse van Rensburg says that only three cases have been reported for
the complex since January, namely a car that was stolen, a robbery and
an assault case. She could not confirm whether the robbery or assault
were linked to the e-mail, but stated categorically that no rape had
been reported.

The gym has denied that any attack took place, and have stated that
they have not advised their female patrons not to utilise the gym after
8pm.

Neighbourhood Watch,
School and Traffic Officials Team up

On Thursday last week a special enforcement exercise was undertaken by
a few traffic officers around the Framesby High School in Framesby,
Port Elizabeth. This exercise was undertaken in conjunction with the
Framesby Neighbourhood Watch and Framesby High School, who advised the
parents and students that they should comply with the requirements of
the Road Traffic Act. Even with the circulars issued, 32 cases were
recorded including, among others, 13 fines issued for no driver’s
license, three fines for learner driver not accompanied by licensed
driver and six fines for unlicensed motor vehicles.

There were unlicensed drivers as young as 14 years, who were stopped by
the officers, who are required by the Criminal Procedure Act to issue
the notice to appear in court to the parent or Legal Guardian. Some of
the parents were upset by the fact that we were required by law to
follow these steps .

Children who are this young do not have the mental ability to assess
emergency situations as an adult would, which could have serious
consequences, resulting in fatal or serious injury accidents.
