Mayor Snaps up PE’s First Over the Counter Football Ticket
Hundreds of Eastern Cape football fans descended on the Moffett on Main
Lifestle Centre to snatch up the last of half a million 2010 FIFA World
Cup™ tickets as the fifth and final phase of sales kicked-off yesterday
(Thursday 15 April).

Apart from the hundreds of eager members of the public queuing for
tickets, chief politicians and top officials also arrived to get
involved in what was a morning of celebration and anxious anticipation.

Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile was the first person
to buy a ticket at the newly opened FIFA™ Ticketing Centre at the
Moffett on Main lifestyle centre in Walmer. Right behind him was Cacadu
District Municipal Manager Ted Pillay.
Amongst the first ticket buyers was Bay businessman Ian Larsen, who was
disappointed he couldn’t get tickets for the final in Johannesburg as
they were all “snapped up by 9am”.

“I’m not doing too badly though, I didn’t get what I wanted, to go to
the final – that would have been a once in a lifetime opportunity – but
at least I got quarter final tickets,” said Larsen, an avid England fan
and supporter of Bafana Bafana. About 500 000 tickets were available at
9am yesterday morning, but within four minutes the coveted 300 World
Cup final tickets were sold out – the others selling fast too. A total
of 1610 tickets were sold to 310 customers nationally at the Ticketing
Centres within the first hour after they opened at 9am this morning,
with 2166 tickets also sold to 470 fans at FNB branches.
Maahir Abrahams, who was still waiting patiently in line at 10:30am,
said his hopes were pinned on either getting tickets for the England
versus Slovenia match or Portugal versus Côte d’Ivoire.

“I can’t wait for it (FIFA World Cup™) to start, I’m so excited. My
favorite team is Brazil, but unfortunately they have no games in PE.
It’s also going to be my first time at the stadium if I get tickets
today,” said Abrahams, a pharmacist assistant.
When called later Abrahams said he got tickets for Germany against
Serbia and the Chili-Switzerland games. “I still feel great to have got
tickets – a bit tired since I came straight here from work at 6am, but
very excited.”

The long queue of over 500 people were entertained by Diski dancers and
learnt to “do the Diski” while waiting. Yesterday was the launch of the
2010 FIFA World South Africa™ Ticket. The ticket has unique features
and a barcode. It also contains information about the venue, the match
number, match date, seat category, kick-off time, price, fixture, name
of the applicant, colour sector and seat location. Tickets are on sale
now on-line, at First National Banks and at Shoprite Checkers, from
April 19, in Cleary Park and Newton Park.

The integrated Ticketing System, which manages all sales channels
experienced huge countrywide demand.

“We experienced some delays in issuing tickets at the outset, but we’ve
been working on improving the response time of the system. With the
improvements we have already made the process is getting quicker and we
are confident it will continue to improve throughout the day.” said
James Byrom, the SA Ticketing Manager for MATCH, FIFA’s official
ticketing service provider.
