Metro Police Force ‘Number One’ Priority

www.MyPE.co.za: The
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s plan to establish a Metro Police
Service has reached an important stage. The project team, entrusted
with the task of establishing the Metro Police Service(MPS), has
completed phase 1 of the project and has submitted the application for
the establishment of the service to the office of MEC for Roads,
Transport and Liaison, Gloria Barry. The City is awaiting a response
before 21 March 2010.

‘At the Safety and Security Directorate’s Strategic Session, the
establishment of the Metro Police Service was identified as the number
one priority and we will be investing a lot of time and energy into
ensuring that the service becomes a reality’, said Clr. Bicks Ndoni,
Portfolio Councillor for Safety & Security. ‘We have also
resolved that the Directors For Traffic Services and Security Services,
respectively, should form part of the Metro Police Task Team as this
will help expedite the process. Another important matter that was
discussed is the meaningful involvement of Unions and to this end we
have decided that Unions will have to be engaged so that we take the
process forward, together’, concluded Clr. Ndoni.

Currently, the project team is investigating the areas for the
placement of the MPS precincts, which we envisage to be closer to the
people of Nelson Mandela Bay. The City hopes that these precincts will
ensure that the people of Nelson Mandela Bay are better served in their
safety and security needs. The project team has also been preparing
inputs to be made to the proposed by-laws for dilapidated buildings
which will also become a competency of the Metro Police Service.
