Move Over Bafana Bafana, Proteas and the Bokke
On Thursday 30 July the NMMU will announce their new nickname and
introduce their first-ever institutional mascot.

Nelson Mandela Bay may have recently bid farewell to its two popular
dolphins, Dumisa and Domino, but Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
(NMMU) hopes to try to make up for the loss with the introduction of
its first institutional mascot.

While the likes of the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and
Pretoria each has a colloquial pet name, NMMU has not, until now.

The process of finding a nickname was an inclusive one. Staff, students
and even the general public – since NMMU is very much Nelson Mandela
Bay’s own university – were invited to submit their choice of a name.

The winning entry or nickname will be drawn on Thursday from a group of
three finalists at an event scheduled to start at 12:00 outside The
Kraal on the university’s South Campus and will include fun activities.
T-shirts with the nickname printed on it will also be on sale at the

NMMU has 22 sport codes which include rugby, cricket, soccer, netball,
hockey, athletics, golf and cycling. The different sporting teams have
a number of national and provincial representatives. The rugby team
also takes part in the annual FNB Varsity Cup and its cricket team is
the Bay’s super league champions.

These students, and anyone who is directly association with NMMU,
find out on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. what they will now be known as and
introduced to their new mascot.

Let us know in the
comments section what you think the new name will be
– the funnier the better!
