NMMU Campus Health Service and Tiger Brands Bring Joy to Needy Kids
www.MyPE.co.za: The
campus health service of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has
joined hands with consumable goods manufacturer Tiger Brands to bring
joy to the lives of hungry and needy children by providing food
products every month.
In addition, a children’s party was held at Sinethemba
Children’s
Home in Korsten
today, to celebrate the funds generated by the Unite
Against Hunger (UAH) project.
Tiger Brands established UAH as a section 21 company for the purpose of
carrying out its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programmes, with the
aim of alleviating hunger and improving the quality of life for many
poverty stricken South Africans.
The money raised will be divided among seven charity organisations of
which NMMU‘s
day care centres is one. These charities are located
throughout South Africa and have been selected by SPAR
and Tiger
Brands.
A cheque for more than R150 000 was handed over to the NMMU Campus
Health Services and will be distributed among the four facilities that
it supports on a monthly basis. The funds will be used to improve the
lives of the children in these facilities.
Deputy Director of the NMMU Campus Health Service Sister Antoinette
Goosen said that in line with the institution’s core value of being an
engaged institution, they had embarked on this community project to
assist their on-campus community as well as four children’s homes in
the Port Elizabeth area. With the assistance of the NMMU Trust they
were able to get support from Tiger Brands to realize their dream.
In July 2008, a formal agreement was established and Tiger Brands
committed themselves to provide monthly food products to the
university. The items are then distributed by the project team
comprising Sister Goosen, Ms Nomatemba Pangwa and Nobatembu Mafanya, to
four identified children’s facilities in the metro.
Tiger Brands is not only assisting communities in and around Port
Elizabeth, but also future leaders as some of these food items are
distributed to four of the university’s Port Elizabeth campuses.
