Ocean Racing Series Round 2

www.MyPE.co.za: A packed Hobie Beach
witnessed over 500 participants taking part in Sunday’s Weekend
Ocean Racing Series round 2. The morning was filled with 7 exciting
events with the Dis-Chem 3km Ocean Swim creating the most controversity
as top EP open water swimmer Michael Marais missed the final turn buoy
on his way back to the beach at the end of his last lap. Marais who led
the race out of the water was slapped with a 30sec time penatly which
gave challenger, 15 year old Wayne Jones, the top spot on the morning
by a mere 7 seconds. Marais will be furious with himself as he has
dominated the longer open water swimming distances this season and the
win by Jones will boost the youngsters confidence for upcoming events.
16 year old Hanre Barnard placed 3rd on the morning, just ahead of
Jessica Roux who maintained her unbeaten form in the 3km swim ahead of
Chrislie Niehaus and Denise Bosman. Bosman, at 51 years of age, is in
fantastic form this season, finishing 20th overall in the swim.

In the popular 1km Ocean Swim, featuring more than 200 swimmers, Chris
van de Sande is currently in unbeatable form with another convincing
win over second placed Wesley Wiehahn and Jason Jones. As is the form
of the Billson sisters with Carmel maintained the top spot in the
ladies race from younger sibling Lauren with Kaleigh Graham in 3rd
place. Van de Sande ended off a great day by scooping the R1,200 Adidas
winners jackpot.

Positions in the Mens 5km Beach Run remained unchanged from round 1
with Marinus Johnson winning from Roberltuis Matthys and Antonio
Seconds whilst Ursula Kuhn defended her ladies title from Helen Mentzel
and Benita Brown. There was another huge turnout for the kids 12u 1km
Beach Run which saw 12 year old Calum-Lee Boshoff beating round 1
winner Johan Jacobs to the line whilst 8 year old Nicholas Kingston had
a storming run to finish 3rd oveall. 10 year old Jenna Parry continued
her winning form in the girls race. 9 year old Jason du Rand won the
R100 cash from Crowhurst and Bond Optometrists at the finish whilst all
participants in the kids race enjoyed an exciting lucky draw prize
giving featuring prizes valued in excess of R4,000.

“Sunday’s round 2 down at Hobie Beach was fantastic as it’s great to
see so many families coming down and being active”, said race organiser
Mike Zoetmulder of Zports.
“With over 500 participants taking part, the
greatest growth is coming from the youngsters who are not only taking
part in the kids 1km beach run, but also venturing into the 1km swim or
5km beach run events.”

The Series also realised their 3rd dream of the Season for the Reach
for a Dream foundation when 6 year old Thulani from New Brighton was
presented with his dream of owning lots of toy cars. Thulani who has
been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma was overwhelmed to be presented
with his dream in front of a packed Hobie Beach. Following the
presentation, Thulani was joined by his family and members of the Reach
for a Dream foundation to a sponsored breakfast at the Boardwalk Wimpy.
Earlier in the week the Series also realised the dream of 4 year old
Tammy from George when she was presented with her very own trampoline.

Whilst all the participants got a change of winning lucky draw prizes
valued in excess of R15,000, the luckiest on the day was Alexis
Koumbarakis who walked off with the Zports R1,500 Series Members cash
Jackpot prize.
