PE Business Challenged to Create Bay Soccer Vibe
Momentum is mounting for the 2010 FIFA World Cup as Nelson Mandela Bay
business catches “football fever” – flying flags high, participating in
Football Fridays and playing impromptu soccer games, but mainly
challenging other businesses and individuals to start contributing to
the soccer excitement.

Leading the pack is the Boardwalk and Volkswagen South Africa. The
Boardwalk has laid out the decks with a colorful array of the 32 flags
of nations playing in the first African World Cup ever and VW has
actively been encouraging all their employees to be involved in
“Football Friday” initiatives, amongst other staff activities.

NMB 2010 executive director Errol Heynes said he was encouraged by
those businesses that were already committed to creating a “truly
African World Cup vibe”.

“The more we have business on board – and the more they contribute to
creating a positive World Cup atmosphere – the better this tournament
is going to be,” said Heynes. “Literally, the more the merrier – and
what merrier an occasion than the first FIFA World Cup on African
shores? I really want to encourage businesses to become part of the
football excitement by buying tickets for deserving employees so they
can say I was there.”

For over a month visitors to the Boardwalk have been greeted by the
flags of all 32 participating countries in the car park and complex.
They have also organised staff soccer games and challenged other
business to get on board.

On Wednesday morning 14 April, in an effort to create a spirit around
the World Cup, the Boardwalk staff played a knock-out soccer tournament
on the Marine Drive lawn.

“We want to remind our staff that the World Cup is just around the
corner and that they must get ready to warmly welcome thousands of
foreign guests in less than 60 days,” says Boardwalk Marketing Manager,
Tanuja Gangabishun adding that they challenged other businesses to
build momentum and a World Cup “vibe”.

Five teams consisting of casino dealers, kitchen staff, cleaners,
gardeners and management battled it out on a mini-field to get the
soccer spirit flowing.

VW also has plans afoot for both leading up to and during the World
Cup, including a Football Fridays promotion.

Amongst other programmes VW will contribute to raising the profile of
the city by bringing out a massive contingent of international
journalists over the tournament to tour their plant and showcase their
social responsibility projects.

“Volkswagen is bringing about 100 international journalists to the
Nelson Mandela Metro during the World Cup. Of course we will take this
opportunity to visit games being played in Port Elizabeth and show off
our new Nelson Mandela Bay stadium,” said VW communications general
manager Bill Stephens.

Bel-Essex Corporation on Darling
Street, near the Nelson Mandela Bay
Stadium, has flags hanging down the side of their building adding a
kaleidoscopic flash welcoming motorists and in the future, tourists, as
they come off the highway on the way to games.

FIFA World Cup ticket centres opened throughout South Africa today. In
Nelson Mandela Bay the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Ticketing Centre is at the
Moffet on Main Shopping Centre.
Tickets are also available at
Shoprite-Checkers in Cleary Park
and Newton Park and at FNB.
