Port Elizabeth’s Jacques Cousteua

www.MyPE.co.za:
Locally based
marine expert and environmental filmmaker, Rainer Schimpf’s film,
Opaque, which highlights the Port Elizabeth coastline and marine
animals, has been collecting international awards:

  1. A Bronze Award in the “Seestern” Underwater
    Film Festival
    in Germany,
  2. The EUIFA Environment Award to Opaque
    Director and Author Rainer
    Schimpf,
  3. The Special Jury Prize Longs et Moyens
    Metrages (Films Groupe A).

Rainer’s son, Jonas Schimpf (11 years of age)
has a major role in this
production and has the following to say; “I believe we humans do not
really understand how everything really is connected in nature. Sadly
only when we see or experience consequences do we start thinking. Since
my generation will be directly affected, now may be the time
to react.
This is the main message this film will give to the audience”

WhaleSharkWe asked Jonas if he
has to dive in the film; “No, not in Opaque, but
the new production will have underwater scenes with me in
it. I am a
qualified SSI Junior Open Water Diver so I will be able to dive. I dove
with a Whaleshark in Mozambique during our December Holiday and it was
great!” “I jumped from the boat into the deep blue ocean and swam after
my dad, when, suddenly, right in front of me a 7 meter Whaleshark
appeared. It looked at me and I looked at him. Than it swam on and I
was very excited!”

Jonas’ Dad, Rainer Schimpf, heads up the Ocean Messengers NGO and has
regularly received international recognition for his environmental film
productions in which most of the footage has been shot underwater in
and around Port Elizabeth. Rainer says; “We are privileged with the
marine life that we have in Algoa Bay.”

Opaque will be shown in a special showing on 3 February at 7:00 p.m. at
The Uptown
Theatres
in Port Elizabeth. Entry: R20.00 per person
