Proteas Netball Team on the Up and Up Port
Elizabeth – Netball South Africa (NSA) received good news from the
International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) on the eve of
the annual SPAR National Netball
Championships starting on Monday at
the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
in Port Elizabeth.

After the Proteas impressive showing in a tri-nations tournament
involving Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago followed by a three nil
whitewash of Barbados and victory against Botswana and Fiji in
the SPAR
Challenge series, South Africa moved up one place in the IFNA world
rankings to occupy the 6th spot.

In the past 18 months that she has been in charge of the national team,
Carin Strauss has guided the team from 9th place to its current
6th place ranking. “I have always maintained that we deserve to be one
of the top
5 teams in the world. Healthy rankings are very crucial in that they
afford us exposure and an opportunity to attract challenges from
countries in the league of England, Jamaica and others”, explains

Strauss also believes their latest performances and the improved
ranking will help persuade SASCOC to give NSA the nod for next year’s
Commonwealth Games in Delhi. “As far as IFNA is concerned, we have
already qualified but they (SASCOC) have a final say on which sporting
codes represents the country at such international events”, she said.

The national team coach is hoping to unearth precious netball gems at
this year’’s national championships to help advance her course. The
week-long tournament featuring 32 male and female teams from across the
country ends on Saturday. Entrance is free.

Current IFNA World
