Rhino Plastics and Schaeffler are EC’s Most Productive Companies

www.MyPE.co.za: The
inaugural Eastern Cape Productivity Awards were presented on Thursday
29 August 2010 at a dinner held in partnership with PERCCI.

Productivity South Africa was born out of the National Productivity
Inistitute of South Africa that was initially established in 1969.
Productivity
SA
is a tripartite organisation, drawn from government,
organised labour and business, that is dedicated to the development and
enhancement of South Africa’s productivity by unleashing the spirit of
continuous productivity improvement in all South Africans.

For the first time in the Eastern Cape awards were given in the
Emerging and Corporate sectors, with certificates going to each
business that entered.

Rhino PlasticsFinalists in the
Emerging sector category were ID
Controls
(Denise
Nielson
), Mali
Technologies
(Sabelo
Mali
), Acumen
Business Assist

(Corrine
Clack
), Rhino
Plastics
(A.
Alley
) and Ecola
Plastics
(S.
Tahokela
).

Rhino and Ecola Plastics took part as a result of their involvement
with the Workplace Challenge Programme. The
Workplace Challenge (WPC)
programme is a world-class manufacturing, or Best Operating Practice,
programme aimed at helping manufacturing companies in South Africa to
become more competitive.

The winner of the Eastern Cape Emerging Sector Productivity award for
2010 was Rhino Plastics with A. Alley accepting the award on behalf of
Rhino. Mr Alley said that as a result of their involvement with
Productivity SA the morale of employess was now very high, that both
Rhino and Ecola had had no retrenchments from inception of the
programme and that the company has returned to a 5 day week from a 3
day week before the inception of the programme.

Schaeffler SA Marshal MyburghThe Corporate Sector
Productivity Award was contested between
Schaeffler
SA
(Marshal
Myburgh
) and Astore
(Jacobus
Vermaak
), both from
Port Elizabeth, with Schaeffler being nominated as the first recipient
of the inaugural Eastern Cape Produvtivity Awards for 2010.

Accepting the award Marshal Myburgh, from Schaeffler, invited all
interested parties to visit the Schaeffler plant and they would share
best practice, provided that the invite was reciprocated.

All the finalists are now automatically entered into the National
Productivity Awards competition.

The BIG Question – Is
Productivity SA a Productive Organisation?

Acting CEO of Productivity SA, Bongani
Coka
, pointed out that
productivity is doing; “The right thing at the right time, all the
time.” Coka went on to point out that since 1969 over 400 productivity
awards have been given and that the first company to receive a
productivity award three times in a row was SAPPI.

“By showcasing the success of our award winners we are encouraging
other businesses to excel”, said Coka.

Standing in for the Eastern Cape Premier, Mrs Noxolo Kiviet, was Mr
Monde
Kasawe
, GM of Policy and Planning in the Premiers Office who
pointed out that with 12.5 million South Africans unemployed a
productive nation will create more jobs.

Once all the awards had been handed out and speeches completed I
glanced at my watch to see that we were AHEAD OF SCHEDULE by 30
minutes. Congratulations to Philiswa
Mnguni
and Productivity SA for
showing Port Elizabeth
and South Africa that they are streets ahead of
everyone when it comes to productivity.

So, put a BIG
TICK
in the Productive column for Productivity SA.
