Splash Development Mile Attracts Hundreds
www.MyPE.co.za: The
waters of Algoa Bay will be a hive of activity this Easter when
hundreds of swimmers take to the waves for the Nelson Mandela Bay
Development Mile.
This event forms part of the 19th annual MTN
Nelson Mandela Bay Splash
Festival, which takes place from April 10 to 13 at Hobie
Beach.
According to Michael Zoetmulder of Zports,
the festival’s watersport
coordinator, this watersport family festival will once again be packed
with exciting watersport items and other entertainment.
“The development mile is undoubtedly one of the watersport highlights.
Participants will swim from Hobie to Humewood Beach and back.”
Zoetmulder says about a hundred children from Motherwell and KwaZakhele
will also take part on Easter Sunday. “This item offers a wonderful
opportunity for young swimmers to gain experience in open water
swimming.”
According to him, people will compete in age groups ranging from U/13
to over 50. “Although swimmers will battle it out in their respective
categories, participants will take to the water in a mass start at
11am.”
The first 30 men and women to finish the mile will qualify for the
King/Queen of Nelson Mandela Bay Swim Challenge. This knock-out contest
starts at 12.30pm and will, according to Zoetmulder, last about an hour.
“This event is extremely popular among spectators and will therefore
start and finish at Shark Rock Pier.”
Anyone can enter the development mile. Participation is free and people
can register from 9am.
Apart from beach and watersports, there will also be activities for
kids, live entertainment and more than a hundred stalls, according to
programme coordinator David Limbert of Magnetic
Storm.
“Big names in the music industry like Mafikizolo, DJ Ossewa and Flash
Republic featuring Tamara Déy will perform live,” says Limbert, “and
youngsters can join in the fun every morning when favourites like
Little Gerry and Rocket Man will have them in stitches.”
