Vernon Castle Pays Tribute to George Benson and Al Jarreau

weekend, some of South Africa’s top jazz muso’s will pay tribute to two
of their ‘idols.’

Vernon Castle and his “After Sunset” band will take to the stage in the
Vodacom Amphitheatre at The
Boardwalk
on Saturday, 27 June at 19h30.

Vernon Castle BandCastle has travelled
around the globe performing his art with the likes
of Winston Mankuku, Sammy Hartman and Robbie Jansen. He is known as the
“Al Jarreau” of South Africa and is looking forward to paying tribute
to one of his favourite artists. American-born Jarreau has won five
Grammy Awards and has a star on the Holly Wood Walk of Fame. “His music
is innovative and very exciting to play,” says Castle.

Castle’s
After Sunset band
is made up of very experienced musicians
who
have travelled extensively in Abu Dhabi, the USA and throughout South
Africa.

Lead guitarist, Ryan Mayer says his idol is George Benson. “I was
studying classical guitar, but when I heard Benson’s music I fell in
love with jazz,” says Mayer.

Benson is another one of America’s most influential jazz musicians. He
began his music career in the 1950′s as a jazz guitarist and has played
for Miles Davis and Quincy Jones.

In 2006, Benson and Jarreau toured America, South Africa, Australia and
New Zealand to promote their album Givin’ It Up.

After Sunset also includes Alan Yon on bass, Bjorn Petersen on drums,
Bernard Lionel Damon on keyboards and vocalist, Charmaine Darries.

Two Eastern Cape acts will open for After Sunset on Saturday evening.
Cizario Roberts and Irene van der Merwe from East London were 2004
Coca-Cola
Pop Stars semi-finalists and will be performing some of their
favourite jazz standards. Hip hop duo, Urban Legend will also take to
the stage. The band has performed with Jamali and is involved with
several outreach projects in the Bay area.

The show starts at 19h30 and tickets cost R80 from
