Wezandla Celebrates 15 Years

www.MyPE.co.za: In
1994 Cathy Binnell and Glynis Baer established the well known and
respected local arts and crafts gallery, Wezandla.

Wezandla was born out of the need that many local African Crafters had
for a gallery dedicated to the showcasing and selling of indigenous
African arts and crafts. Glynis and Cathy, with their many years of
experience running development projects for Operation Hunger, were
uniquely positioned at the coal face of arts and crafters in the
Eastern Cape.

The founding objective was to create a market for people who were
creative and artistic and to expose their products to the general
public.

New innovations were added when a coffee shop opened in 1996 and
regular art exhibitions show-casing local artists became an institution.

Cathy Binnell left Wezandla when relocating to the UK and Glynis has
‘gone it alone’ ever since. Cathy has subsequently returned to Port
Elizabeth and runs the successful Rooftops Guest House.

Over the years the profile of customers has changed and reflects the
development of tourism and the general Port Elizabeth economy.

At present the hunting industry, local motor industry, tourists and the
general public are regular visitors to Wezandla, which has become a
prime spot for gifts given to local politicians, public figures,
visiting musicians, artists, and big names in the corporate world.

Custom made items and conference gifts can also be made to order – if
Wezandla does not stock an item, they will find or make it for you.
Wezandla has also supported the local sailing community by sourcing
unique trophies and gifts for international sailing regattas.

Local crafters and artists display their products and many of them have
earned a reputation as well as a good income.

Visiting this Baakens Street shop requires time as there is so much to
see. Ask the friendly staff for recommendations if you are in a hurry,
though.

During Wezandla’s 15th birthday month they are offering a discount on
everything in the shop from 15 October until 15 November 2009.

Wezandla are
also hosting an art exhibition titled ‘Private Collection’
downstairs in the gallery with works by well known artists such as;
Cecil Skotness, Amos Langdown, Filia Theron, Hargreaves Ntukwana and
many others.
