What Our Mayor Learned From his Time at Continental

www.MyPE.co.za: More
than one thousand disadvantaged children and 179 adults watched a first
round World Cup Soccer game in Port Elizabeth, thanks to Continental
Tyre South Africa (CTSA).
The tyre firm, who were key sponsors of the
FIFA World Cup in South Africa, donating tickets to beneficiaries
selected from organisations that the tyre firm already supports.

The World Cup attendees included children from child-headed households
in Port Elizabeth. These children have already received school uniforms
via Continental’s donation to the Mandela Bay Municipality’s Back to
School Fund. Tickets to the World Cup were also given to the SOS
Children’s Village, Protea and the Erica Place of Safety.

Seventeen wheel-chairs bound children and 110 of their friends, all of
whom attend the Northern Lights School for Disabled children, also
attended a first round World Cup game, thanks to the tyre firm.

Says CTSA HR Manager Odette Kruger, “The wheel-chair bound kids
received VIP treatment from stadium staff and FIFA representatives at
the match and enjoyed every minute of their day. Northern Lights
received a R100 000 donation toward a new school bus for the disabled
learners from CTSA earlier this year, but we wanted to give the
children a memorable soccer treat as well.”

Continental Tyre also has strong ties to the Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan University (NMMU)
and every year the Company sources
between 10 to 15 pre and postgraduate students  for in-service
training and internship programs in the Engineering, Production,
Marketing and Logistics departments at the tyre firm.

Says Kruger, “The NMMU Engineering Faculty champions a Winter School
for Grade 12 in Mathematics and Science. CTSA also contributed to the
school financially. In addition, certain employees were involved in
coaching and assisting the young scholars at this school. We also
donate specially made racing slicks to NMMU’s Formula Student project.
Students at NMMU Engineering have built their own car and will race it
against other students from all over the world, at an international
event – with Continental tyres.”

NMMU’s Centre for African Conservation Ecology also receives donations
of tyres for their off road vehicles from Continental Tyre for use in
their research at the Addo Elephant Park.

Says Kruger, “We also fund the “Move It, Moving Matters” programme,
designed to re-introduce physical education into government schools in
a manner that allows for objective measurement of the impact on
scholastic and sporting abilities. CTSA has sponsored the
implementation of a pilot project at the Lamani Primary School and Ben
Sinuka Primary School in Zwide since July 2010.

“Furthermore, SOS Children’s Village, which is less than four
kilometres from the Continental plant and therefore part of our
neighbourhood community, benefits from an annual CTSA donation.” says
Kruger.

She adds, “Continental Tyre is fully behind the principles of
development through education, exercise and a sustainable environment
and we are doing what we can to ensure that projects that work on these
principles in the Eastern Cape, receive our full support.”

Editors Note:
I like to think that the time Mayor Xanoxolo Wayile spent at
Continental was an ‘apprenticeship’ in learning how to care for and
grow his fellow Port Elizabethans!
